The CZECH-AMERICAN HORN DUO (Steven Gross and Jirí Havlík of the Czech Philharmonic) made its first appearance on the West Coast in April. At UCSB the Duo played, followed by Jirí leading a masterclass, lecturing about the Czech Philharmonic, and conducting a mass horn ensemble. Jarrett Webb performed the second of his two Master's recitals. His repertoire featured worthwhile but lesser known works. The opening concerto by Othmar Schoeck was followed by a 20th century unaccompanied tour de force by P Kavanaugh. The recital concluded with the commendable Trio for Horn, Violin, and Piano by Dame Ethel Smyth.

Warren Gref (36 years San Diego Symphony) gave an amazing clinic. Beginning with the concept of tone, he smoothly moved to its implications in colors, emotions, slurs, etc., and finally Brahms. His analogies was engaging and humorous. We look forward to hosting him again!
